Things to Do

Peacock Cottage is located in the heart of the Forest of Dean and so there is plenty of opportunity to fill your holiday with fun and fantastic days out. Below are just some of the great things you can do in and around the area, whether you want to drive down, cycle or even walk to your chosen attraction, the outstanding surroundings of the forest will keep you wondering what is around the next corner. In addition to the below, The Royal Forest of Dean is famous for its outstanding natural beauty and therefore we strongly recommend going for a walk or a bike ride along the forest paths and tracks and along the meandering brooks. Your walk or cycle would not be complete without stopping at one of the many country pubs for a drink of your choice.

Puzzlewood

Puzzlewood is a unique and magical destination in the beautiful Forest of Dean, set in approximately 14 acres. It is made up of many meandering pathways, wooden bridges and moss covered rocks. Many also believe Puzzlewood was the inspiration for the fabled forests of Middle Earth in ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’. A truly wonderful adventure for children!

Go Ape!

Go Ape is a tree top adventure for both children and adults (minimum age 10). It is a incredible 3 hour adventure through the tree tops where you will take on zip wires, tarzan swings, rope ladders and a huge variety of high wire crossings set in a picturesque forest.

Dean Forest Cycles

Dean Forest Cycles is situated in Parkend nestled in the Forest of Dean, it is only a few hundred metres from the start of the traffic free Family Cycle Trail. You are able to hire high standard mountain and trail bikes, with the addition of children’s bikes, trailers, tow-a-longs, gater bars and baby seats. The hire of the bikes includes helmets, tool kits and also locks. There are family discounts and off peak offers available. There is also a warm cafe to finish your exploration in the Forest where muddy boots are no problem!

Littledean Jail

Littledean Jail is far more than a jail as you will discover if you dare to enter! It was a former house of correction, police station and courthouse. It is one of the most talked about, unorthodox historical attractions set in the Forest of Dean. There is a huge collection of exhibits ranging from the sad to the more taboo subject matters. The jail also includes the belongings and tools of Gloucestshire’s infamous serial killers and strange looking creatures. Some say it is not suitable for those who are easily offended, so beware!

The Dean Forest Railway

The Dean Forest Railway is where you can experience a magical journey through the Forest to Parkend on a railway that is operated by steam trains – with some heritage diesel services. There is free parking, a museum, cafe and gift shop at the Norchard station. You can also hop on at Whitecroft, Lydney Town, St Mary’s Hall and Lyndey Junction and you only have to pay once and can ride all day long!

Clearwell Caves

Clearwell Caves is an attraction that is fun and exciting for the whole family. It is a place where iron ore has been mined for many years. It is a working mining museum where visitors can see extraordinary caverns with geological and mining displays. The caves are an important part of The Forest of Deans history so it is well worth a visit.
